The aim of this study is to assess the clinical significance of the ciprofloxacin mic value for predicting the incidence of hospitalization for pneumonia in hospitalized patients admitted to an emergency department (ED).

MethodsWe prospectively analyzed the medical records of patients admitted to an ED in a tertiary hospital. The study was conducted at the following hospitals:

The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Al-Mubarak University Hospital and by the Committee of Medicine, Medical and Medical Science, Al-Jahiri Medical College, Al-Shifa Medical University, Al-Shifa, Egypt.

A total of 909 patients from the ED were admitted to the ED between January 2009 and January 2011. Of these patients, 955 were female (mean age, 53.9 years, range, 22 to 86 years), of which 323 were males (53.3%), with a median duration of hospitalization of 3 days (range, 1 to 14 days). Of the 323 patients, 112 were admitted to the hospital after a short stay (≤4 days) and were included in the analysis. The median number of patients in the study group was 7 (4 to 15) with a median number of days per patient. The median number of days per patient was 2 (1 to 8) for patients in the study group and 1 (0 to 2) for patients in the control group. The median number of days per patient was 0 (1 to 9) for patients in the study group and 0 (0 to 1) for patients in the control group. The median length of hospitalization was 5 (1 to 14) days in the study group and 2 (0 to 4) days in the control group. There were no differences between the two groups regarding the incidence of the following adverse events:

  • Acute bacterial infection (10%): 7 (5%) patients in the study group and 10 (12%) in the control group
  • Acute renal failure (10%): 4 (4%) patients in the study group and 5 (7%) in the control group
  • Complicated intra-abdominal infection (10%): 4 (4%) patients in the study group and 3 (3%) in the control group
