Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat and a growing problem worldwide. In addition to the common resistance to a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, there is growing interest to explore the use of ciprofloxacin as a new antibiotic alternative in combination with other drugs.

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem worldwide. Study patients

Results

The study included 892 subjects with AMR in the cefinidine group and 893 in the placebo group. Of the 892 subjects, 89 (50.4%) were treated with cefinidine and 68 (34.6%) were treated with placebo. Of the 89 subjects who were treated with cefinidine, 55 (50.9%) developed bacterial resistance to cefinidine and 17 (9.4%) to placebo. Of the 89 subjects who were treated with placebo, 15 (7.5%) developed antibiotic resistance to cefinidine and 10 (6.4%) to placebo. The majority of the patients (83.5%) in the cefinidine group and 70.4% in the placebo group developed antibiotic resistance to cefinidine.
